More than a simple average

True Weighted Average

Homework 10%, final 50% — weights change everything. Add unlimited categories and get the exact grade your syllabus actually produces.

"What I Need on the Final"

The question every student searches before exams. Enter your current grade and target — see the precise score you need, or if it's already secured.

Every result auto-converts to a standard A/A-/B+ letter grade and standing, so you always know where you stand.

How to calculate a weighted grade

In most colleges and high schools your final grade is not a simple average — each category (homework, quizzes, midterm, final) carries a different weight. A weighted grade calculator multiplies every score by its weight, so a 50%-weighted final counts five times more than a 10%-weighted homework set.

The weighted grade formula

Final Grade = Σ(Score × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights)

Example: Homework 80% (weight 20), Midterm 70% (weight 30), Final 90% (weight 50):

(80×20 + 70×30 + 90×50) ÷ 100 = 8200 ÷ 100 = 82%. Enter those three rows in the Current Grade tab and you get 82% instantly, plus the letter grade.

What grade do I need on my final?

This is the single most-searched grade question — and our Final Exam Planner tab answers it exactly. It uses:

Required Final = (Target − (1 − w) × Current) ÷ w

where w is the final's weight as a decimal (40% → 0.40). If you currently have 82%, the final is worth 40%, and you want 85% overall, you need (85 − 0.60×82) ÷ 0.40 = 89.5% on the final. The planner also flags when a target is already secured or mathematically impossible (needs more than 100%).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Weights not adding to 100%: for a final grade they should total 100. If they don't, you're seeing a running average of completed work only.
  • Points vs percent: if homework is out of 200 points, convert it to a percentage before entering it.
  • Dropped scores: if the lowest quiz is dropped, remove it from that category's average yourself first.
  • Rounding too early: calculate the full result, then round once at the end.

Weighted grade vs GPA — which do I need?

This tool gives a percentage-based class grade. If your college reports credit-based grade points (like 8.5 CGPA), use our GPA Calculator or CGPA to Percentage tools instead.

FAQ

Weighted grades — common questions

How do I calculate my weighted grade?
Multiply each category score by its weight, add them up, then divide by the total weight: Grade = Σ(Score × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights). For example (80×20 + 70×30 + 90×50) ÷ 100 = 82%. This calculator does it automatically for any number of categories.
What grade do I need on my final exam?
Open the Final Exam Planner tab, enter your current grade, the final's weight and your target grade. It uses Required Final = (Target − (1 − w) × Current) ÷ w and also tells you if your target is already secured or mathematically impossible.
Do the category weights need to add up to 100%?
For your true final grade, yes — weights should total 100%. But if some categories aren't graded yet, enter only the completed ones to see your current running average. The tool shows a note when weights don't sum to 100%.
Can I calculate my current grade before the final exam?
Yes. Enter only the categories you have scores for (homework, quizzes, midterm) and leave out the final. You get a weighted running average over the weights entered so far — your current standing in the class.
How is a weighted grade different from a simple average?
A simple average treats every score equally. A weighted grade gives each category a different importance — a 50%-weighted final counts five times more than a 10%-weighted homework set. If your syllabus lists weights, weighted grading is the only accurate method.
What if my teacher drops the lowest score?
Work out that category's average without the dropped score first, then enter that adjusted percentage. The calculator can't know your teacher's drop rule automatically, so remove the lowest item manually before entering the weight.
Is my data saved? Is this calculator private?
It's 100% private. All calculations run inside your browser with JavaScript. Your grades and weights are never uploaded, tracked or stored on any server.
