How to calculate your SGPA and GPA
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the metric colleges, recruiters and scholarship boards use to judge academic consistency. It is a credit-weighted score, so a high-credit core subject affects your SGPA far more than a one-credit lab. This SGPA calculator applies the exact university formula so you never have to compute it by hand.
The SGPA / GPA formula
Colleges on both the Indian 10.0 and US 4.0 systems use the same weighted-average logic:
SGPA = Σ (Subject Credits × Grade Points) ÷ Σ (Total Registered Credits)Example: an ‘A’ (8 points) in a 4-credit Maths course earns 32 grade points, while an ‘O’ (10 points) in a 1-credit lab earns just 10. This is exactly why one low grade in a heavy subject can drag your whole semester down.
SGPA to percentage conversion
Most Indian universities (VTU, Anna University, KTU) convert GPA to percentage with a simple rule:

If you are an Indian engineering student applying abroad, you need to know how your grades map to the US 4.0 system. Here is the standard conversion:

SGPA vs GPA vs CGPA
- SGPA: grade point average for a single semester.
- GPA: the general term for grade point average.
- CGPA: the cumulative average of all your semesters combined across the whole degree.

What happens to your GPA if you fail?
An ‘F’ grade awards 0 grade points, but the subject’s credits still count in the denominator — so a single backlog drops your GPA hard. Clearing that backlog later replaces the zero and pushes your CGPA back up.
