How to calculate a weighted grade
In most colleges and high schools your final grade is not a simple average — each category (homework, quizzes, midterm, final) carries a different weight. A weighted grade calculator multiplies every score by its weight, so a 50%-weighted final counts five times more than a 10%-weighted homework set.
The weighted grade formula
Final Grade = Σ(Score × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights)Example: Homework 80% (weight 20), Midterm 70% (weight 30), Final 90% (weight 50):
(80×20 + 70×30 + 90×50) ÷ 100 = 8200 ÷ 100 = 82%. Enter those three rows in the Current Grade tab and you get 82% instantly, plus the letter grade.
What grade do I need on my final?
This is the single most-searched grade question — and our Final Exam Planner tab answers it exactly. It uses:
Required Final = (Target − (1 − w) × Current) ÷ wwhere w is the final's weight as a decimal (40% → 0.40). If you currently have 82%, the final is worth 40%, and you want 85% overall, you need (85 − 0.60×82) ÷ 0.40 = 89.5% on the final. The planner also flags when a target is already secured or mathematically impossible (needs more than 100%).
Percentage to letter grade reference
| Percentage | Letter | Standing |
|---|---|---|
| 97 – 100% | A+ | Outstanding |
| 93 – 96% | A | Excellent |
| 90 – 92% | A− | Excellent |
| 87 – 89% | B+ | Very Good |
| 83 – 86% | B | Good |
| 80 – 82% | B− | Good |
| 70 – 79% | C / C+ / C− | Average |
| 60 – 69% | D | Pass |
| Below 60% | F | Fail |
Grading cut-offs vary by school. Always confirm the exact scale on your syllabus.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Weights not adding to 100%: for a final grade they should total 100. If they don't, you're seeing a running average of completed work only.
- Points vs percent: if homework is out of 200 points, convert it to a percentage before entering it.
- Dropped scores: if the lowest quiz is dropped, remove it from that category's average yourself first.
- Rounding too early: calculate the full result, then round once at the end.
Weighted grade vs GPA — which do I need?
This tool gives a percentage-based class grade. If your college reports credit-based grade points (like 8.5 CGPA), use our GPA Calculator or CGPA to Percentage tools instead.
