How to calculate percentage of marks
Your marks percentage is the single most-used score for board results, admissions and cut-offs. It is an absolute figure out of 100, so it is easy to compare across schools and exams. This marks percentage calculator adds every subject for you and returns an exact figure with the grade and division.
The marks-to-percentage formula
To convert marks to percentage manually, use this simple rule:
Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained ÷ Total Maximum Marks) × 100Example: if you scored 420 out of 500, then (420 ÷ 500) × 100 = 84%. When subjects have different maximums (Maths /80, English /100), always add the obtained column and the maximum column separately before dividing.
CBSE "Best of 5" percentage
For CBSE Class 10 and 12, your percentage is calculated on your one language plus the best four scoring subjects out of the remaining five — the popular Best of 5 rule. Enter only those five subjects (each out of 100) above, and the calculator returns your Best of 5 percentage directly.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Wrong total: not every paper is out of 100 — if an internal is out of 30, enter 30 in the “Out of” field.
- Mixing systems: if your result shows CGPA pointers (8.5, 9.2) instead of raw marks, use a GPA/CGPA tool, not this one.
- Rounding too early: keep two decimals (e.g. 85.55%) for official forms unless whole numbers are required.
