Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my scientific calculator giving wrong sin, cos or tan answers?

Almost always the wrong angle mode. Degree questions need DEG, and π-based or calculus questions need RAD. Quick check: if sin(90) gives 1 you're in Degree mode; if it gives ≈0.894 you're in Radian mode.

Should I use degrees or radians if the question doesn't say?

Degree symbol or school geometry/trig → degrees. Value uses π or comes from calculus → radians. When unsure, try both and see which answer fits the expected range.

What is the difference between log and ln?

log is base 10, so log(100) = 2. ln is base e, so ln(e) = 1. Using one where the other is needed is a very common mistake in exponential problems.

How do I type powers like 2 to the power 3?

Press xʸ (the ^ key). Type 2, then ^, then 3, then =, to get 8. For reciprocals like 5⁻¹, use the x⁻¹ key which inserts ^(-1).

Why does adding brackets change my answer?

The engine follows BODMAS order of operations. Brackets force your intended grouping — sin(30+60) differs from sin(30)+60 — and prevent mistakes in longer expressions.
