Speaking Time Calculator
Turn a word count or your pasted text into an accurate speaking time, or find how many words fit your time limit. Pick a pace, add a pause allowance, and walk on stage prepared.
Made for real presentations
Paste or type
Drop in your whole speech and the word count fills automatically, or just type a number. Both work live.
Pace presets + custom
Slow, average and fast presets, plus any custom words-per-minute for your own delivery style.
Pause allowance
Add time for breaths, slide changes and audience reaction, which most simple word-to-time tools ignore.
How the speaking time calculator works
Speaking time depends on two things: how many words you have and how fast you speak. Divide the word count by your words-per-minute (wpm) pace to get the raw minutes, then add a pause allowance for a realistic on-stage time. This speaking time calculator does both directions: words to time, and time to words.
How many words per minute should I use?
Most people speak between 120 and 150 wpm in a presentation. Slower is clearer, faster feels energetic but risks losing the audience.
- 100 wpm (slow): deliberate, good for complex topics or non-native audiences.
- 130 wpm (average): a comfortable, natural presentation pace.
- 160 wpm (fast): lively and energetic, best for confident speakers.

|---|---|---|---|
| 500 words | 5:00 | 3:51 | 3:07 |
| 750 words | 7:30 | 5:46 | 4:41 |
| 1000 words | 10:00 | 7:42 | 6:15 |
| 1500 words | 15:00 | 11:32 | 9:22 |
| 2000 words | 20:00 | 15:23 | 12:30 |
Tips for staying on time
Practice out loud with a timer, since silent reading is much faster than speaking. Add roughly 5 to 15 percent as a pause allowance for breaths, transitions and any audience laughter or questions. If you are over your limit, cut content rather than speeding up.
